New to Medicare in Wesley Chapel?
If you moved to Wesley Chapel from somewhere else, your old doctors may be far away. Your old plan may not work the same here.
Wesley Chapel’s own share of people 65 and over is 12.4 percent, about 8,040 of its 64,866 residents counted in the 2020 census. Each year more of those neighbors turn 65 and face the same first choice.
That first choice is often between Original Medicare with a supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan. Both can work. The right one depends on how you get care.
What makes Advantage plans differ
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies. Each plan has its own network of doctors and hospitals. An HMO usually asks you to stay in its network. A PPO usually lets you go outside it, often at a higher cost.
Each plan also has its own drug list, and many add extra benefits. Those details can change every year. That is why a plan that fit last year deserves a fresh look this fall.
The tradeoffs of Medicare Advantage, in plain words
Medicare Advantage bundles your coverage into one plan, and plans may add extras like some dental, vision or hearing help. The tradeoff is rules. You may need to stay in a network, get referrals and get approval before some care. Benefits can change each year. Original Medicare with a supplement has fewer of those rules, but more separate pieces.
One timing rule matters before you switch. Medicare.gov says your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is the 6 months that start when you are 65 or older and have Part B. It happens once and does not repeat each year. After it, an insurance company can use medical underwriting, so you may answer health questions, pay more or be turned down.
We start with the care you use
We do not start with a plan. We start with your doctors, your prescriptions and the hospitals you would want to use. Then we compare the Medicare Advantage plans that fit those needs.
As an independent agency, we work with many insurance companies. As our Medicare page says, no plan is automatically right for everyone. If Original Medicare with a supplement fits you better, we will tell you.
- Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO plans
- Medicare Supplement Plan G and Plan N
- Part D drug coverage for your prescriptions
- Dental, vision and hospital indemnity add-ons
Medicare plan types side by side for Wesley Chapel
Wesley Chapel residents choose from the same kinds of Medicare plans as the rest of Pasco County. A Medicare Advantage plan comes from a private company approved by Medicare, often as an HMO or a PPO. Original Medicare can be paired with a supplement and a separate drug plan. The real differences show up in networks, referrals and drug coverage.
| Choice | Network | Referral for a specialist | Drug coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medicare Advantage HMO | Generally stay in the plan’s network, except emergency or urgent care | Yes | Usually included. You cannot add a separate drug plan. |
| Medicare Advantage PPO | You may go outside the network, but you may pay more | No | Usually included. You cannot add a separate drug plan. |
| Special Needs Plan | An HMO type uses its network. A PPO type can go outside it. | Sometimes, depending on the plan | Yes. Every SNP must offer Part D. |
| Original Medicare with a supplement | Any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S. | In most cases, no | Join a separate Part D drug plan |
These rules come from Medicare.gov’s plan type comparison and its side by side page on Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

Wesley Chapel Medicare Advantage FAQ
Which Medicare Advantage plans can I get in Wesley Chapel?
Plans differ by county and change every year. So we check what is offered for your ZIP code when we meet. We compare HMO and PPO options side by side. We look at the networks, the drug lists and the extra benefits that matter to you.
Is a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO better?
Neither is better for everyone. An HMO usually keeps you in its network and may need referrals. A PPO usually lets you see doctors outside the network, often at a higher cost. The right one depends on your doctors and how you like to get care.
Do you have an office in Wesley Chapel?
No. Our office is in Land O’ Lakes at 20547 Amberfield Dr, also in Pasco County. You can visit by appointment, or meet us by phone or on Zoom. A phone call is an easy way to start. The review is the same, however we meet.
Is Medicare Advantage a good idea in Wesley Chapel?
It can be, and it is not right for everyone. A Medicare Advantage plan may suit you if your doctors and hospital are in its network and its rules fit how you get care. If you want the widest choice of doctors, Original Medicare with a supplement may fit better. We lay out both, and you decide.
Can you check if my Wesley Chapel hospital is in a plan's network?
Yes, we check plan networks using current information before you choose. Bring the names of your doctors and the hospitals you prefer. Networks change, so we never promise a doctor or hospital will stay in a plan. We look again each fall.
