Hospital indemnity, in plain English
ProCare Consulting is an independent insurance agency in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. We help individuals, including people on Medicare, understand hospital indemnity insurance. It is a supplemental policy. It pays a set amount to you when a covered hospital stay meets the policy’s terms. We compare options at zero cost to you.
For individuals, including people on Medicare, who want a plan for the costs a hospital stay can leave behind.
Your main health plan pays the hospital. A hospital indemnity policy pays you. That money can help with costs your main plan leaves behind.
- It pays fixed amounts for covered hospital events, not a share of the bill.
- Payments usually go straight to you.
- It adds to your main coverage. It never replaces it.
- Many people review it during Medicare’s fall enrollment.
A hospital stay brings other bills
Even with good insurance, a hospital stay can leave costs behind. There may be a deductible or coinsurance to pay. Life at home keeps going too.
The electric bill still comes. Someone may need to drive you to follow-up visits. You might need help at home while you recover.
Many people do not think about these costs until after a stay. A little planning ahead can make recovery calmer.
Why it pays you a set amount
Most health plans pay a share of the hospital’s bill. Hospital indemnity insurance works differently. The policy lists fixed amounts ahead of time. It pays those amounts when a covered hospital event meets its terms.
For example, a policy might pay one fixed amount for a covered hospital admission. It might pay another for each qualifying day in the hospital. Payments are usually made to you, so you can use the money for cost sharing or everyday bills.
Many people on Medicare Advantage ask about these policies in the fall enrollment season, while they compare plans. A plan’s hospital copays are one reason they look.
Is hospital indemnity insurance worth it?
It depends on your own numbers, not on a rule of thumb. Look at what your main plan leaves you to pay for a hospital stay. Then look at the money you have set aside, and at your health. If a stay would strain your budget, a policy may help. If it would not, you may not need one.
Here is the check we walk through with you, step by step.
- Find your main plan’s share for a stay: the deductible, copays or coinsurance.
- On Medicare? Medicare.gov’s hospital care page explains what Part A covers, and notes that Medicare Advantage plans may charge copays.
- Ask how long you could cover those costs, plus the bills at home while you recover.
- Read what the policy pays for an admission and for each day, and what it leaves out.
- Weigh that against what the policy costs you each month.
If the numbers do not add up for you, we will tell you plainly.
Four things to check in a policy
Benefits vary by insurer and policy, so never assume two plans pay the same way.
Admission benefit
A fixed amount when a covered inpatient admission meets the policy’s rules.
Daily stay benefit
A fixed amount for each qualifying day you stay in the hospital.
Observation stays
A night under observation may not count as an inpatient admission. Read how the policy defines it.
Not major medical
It is supplemental coverage. It does not replace a Marketplace plan, Medicare or other main coverage.
Hospital indemnity compared with your main coverage
Your main health coverage pays a share of the hospital’s bill. A hospital indemnity policy pays fixed amounts, usually to you, whatever the bill turns out to be. It does not replace your health coverage. A federal fact sheet from CMS says it is not a substitute for comprehensive coverage.
| Question | Main health coverage | Hospital indemnity policy |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets paid | Usually the hospital or the doctor | Usually you |
| How it pays | A share of the covered bill | Fixed amounts listed in the policy, no matter what the bill is |
| Does it replace health coverage? | It is your health coverage | No. It adds to your main coverage. |
| How the money can be used | Toward the covered care | As you choose, such as costs your plan leaves or rent at home |
| Works with Medicare? | Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan is the main coverage | It can sit alongside Medicare. It never replaces it. |
Federal rules also require insurers to show a notice in their marketing for these policies, for coverage periods from January 1, 2025. The notice helps people avoid buying one as a replacement for comprehensive coverage, as the CMS fact sheet explains.

Hospital indemnity insurance in Florida FAQ
What does hospital indemnity insurance pay for?
It pays fixed amounts listed in the policy when a covered hospital event meets its terms. A policy might pay one amount for an admission and another for each qualifying day. The money is usually paid to you, so you can use it for cost sharing or household bills.
Can I get hospital indemnity insurance with Medicare?
Yes, many people on Medicare look at these policies. They can sit alongside Medicare Advantage or other coverage, but they never replace it. We look at what your Medicare plan already pays for a hospital stay. Then you can judge whether an add-on makes sense.
Is hospital indemnity the same as health insurance?
No. It is a limited supplemental policy, not comprehensive health insurance. It is not ACA-compliant major medical coverage. It is meant to add to your main plan, so you should understand your main plan first. We help you compare the two side by side.
Does an ER visit count as a hospital stay?
Not always. An emergency room visit does not necessarily count as a hospital admission. A night under observation may not count either. Each policy defines these terms in its own way. We read those definitions with you before you choose a policy.
How much does hospital indemnity pay?
Each policy lists its own fixed amounts. A policy may pay one amount for a covered admission and another for each qualifying day in the hospital. Those amounts differ from policy to policy, so we show you the figures written in each policy itself. Benefits are paid only as the policy’s terms allow.
