Our approach

How ProCare helps you compare Medicare plans

We start with you, not with a plan. First we learn about your doctors, your prescriptions, how often you get care and what matters most to you. Then we look at the options that fit.

As an independent agency, we work across many insurance companies. No one plan type is right for everyone. We like to say there is no bad insurance, just bad fits, and our Medicare page explains how we compare options.

  • Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO options
  • Medicare Supplement Plan G and Plan N
  • Medicare Part D drug coverage
  • Your doctors, specialists and hospitals
  • Extra add-ons like dental, vision and hospital indemnity

Medicare plan types you can compare in Pasco County

In Pasco County, as anywhere, you choose between Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan from a private company. Advantage plans come as HMOs, PPOs and Special Needs Plans, among other types. Original Medicare can be paired with a Medicare Supplement and a Part D drug plan. Which plans you can join depends on where you live.

Medicare plan types compared
Plan type What it is Doctors and hospitals Who it may fit
Medicare Advantage HMO A private plan approved by Medicare that covers Part A and Part B, usually with drug coverage Generally the plan’s network, except emergency or urgent care. You need a referral to see a specialist. People fine with one network and one main doctor
Medicare Advantage PPO A private plan with a network you can step outside of You may go out of network, but you may pay more. No referral needed. People who want more choice of doctors
Special Needs Plan (SNP) A Medicare Advantage plan for people with certain conditions, or with both Medicare and Medicaid Depends on whether the SNP is an HMO or a PPO People who meet the plan’s special conditions
Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement Part A and Part B, plus a supplement such as Plan G or Plan N to help pay your share of costs Any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S. People who want to keep doctors outside any network
Part D drug plan Separate drug coverage from a private plan approved by Medicare Uses the plan’s own drug list People on Original Medicare who take prescriptions

The network and referral rules come from Medicare.gov’s comparison of Medicare Advantage plan types and its page that compares Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Plan lists change every year, so we look them up for your ZIP code when we meet.

Why it feels hard

Medicare mail piles up fast every fall

Every fall the mailbox fills up. Postcards, phone calls and TV ads all say their plan is the one. It is hard to know who to trust, and it is easy to put the whole thing off.

Land O’ Lakes’ own share of people 65 and over is 18.8 percent, about 6,750 of its 35,929 residents counted in the 2020 census. That is a lot of neighbors facing the same choice at the same time of year.

Most of them want the same simple things. Keep my doctors. Cover my prescriptions. Do not surprise me with a bill. Those are fair things to want. They just take some careful checking to get right.

Stack of paperwork
Why it changes

Why last year’s Medicare plan may not fit this year

Plans can change from one year to the next. A doctor can leave a network. A drug can move to a different tier. A benefit you counted on can look different in the new plan year.

Your life changes too. You may have a new doctor, a new prescription or a new diagnosis. Maybe you are about to leave a job and the group plan that came with it.

That is why we check what is current, not what was true last year. We always check your doctors with current information. We never promise a doctor ahead of time. Our Medicare resources explain the basics if you want to read ahead.

Medicare questions from Land O’ Lakes

Our office is at 20547 Amberfield Dr, Land O’ Lakes, FL 34638. We meet by appointment only, so please call or text us first. If driving in is hard, we can also meet by phone or on Zoom. The help is the same either way.

No. Our help costs you nothing. Licensed agents are paid by the insurance companies, not by the people they help. You can ask all your questions, compare your options and take time to think it over. There is no charge for any of it.

For many people, it is the network. Most Medicare Advantage plans ask you to use the doctors and hospitals in their network for routine care, and an HMO usually needs referrals. You may also need the plan’s approval before it covers certain services. We check those rules against your own doctors.

Most people change plans during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, for coverage that starts January 1. If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can also switch from January 1 to March 31. Other times are possible after a move or other life changes.

Yes, we check with current information before you choose a plan. Doctor networks can change, so we never promise a doctor will stay in a plan. We look again when your plan renews. Bring a list of your doctors and specialists to the meeting.
